Cape May Libraries Offer Something for Everyone

The verdict is in: more than 50,000 people attend Cape May County Library’s 2,500 annual events each year. Cape May residents know they have a jewel in their community, and one reason is because of the unique programming the library system offers, for patrons of all ages.

One of the library’s most popular programs is its Inclusive Storytime, which invites children ages 3-7, of all levels of abilities, to join in the fun, featuring stories, music, and puppetry.

A children’s librarian dresses up as Captain America for a superhero-themed storytime.

Another immersive program, this one for teens, is the twice-monthly Teen Ukulele Club. Ukuleles are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, per their policy: “Whether you are a ukulele legend or never touched an instrument in your life!”

Teens are also welcome to join a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. Once a week, players create a character and set out on an adventure involving quests, puzzles, and teamwork, or teen patrons can attend the Dungeon Master’s Boot Camp to learn how to organize a game.

A group of teens gather in the Cape May Court House teen area for ukulele club.

And for adults, the library offers cooking demonstrations, painting classes, and practical meditation for patrons of all skill levels. One-on-one tech assistance is available on Walk In Wednesdays, where patrons can receive up to 30 minutes of personal help.

Patrons gather at the Sea Isle City library to paint two sunset wine glasses.

On Saturday, March 23, libraries around the state will celebrate New Jersey Maker’s Day, and Cape May’s will be in Sea Isle City, hosted by its Technology Learning Center. This all-ages event connects individuals with libraries, schools, businesses, and independent makerspaces that support making, tinkering, crafting, manufacturing, and STEM-based learning.

The Cape May County Library permits those visiting the county, except for those visiting Avalon and Ocean City, for any time less than 6 months to apply for a free visitor’s card. In order to obtain a library card, visitors must bring proof of address for where they are staying within the county as well as ID for their home address.
