Summit Library Tackles Increasingly Popular Trend of the Gap Year

The Summit Free Public Library will be hosting an event on the topic of gap years, presented by Katherine Stievater, Gap Year Advisor and Founder of Gap Year Solutions, on Monday, May 6 at 7:00 PM. A gap year, also known as a sabbatical year, is defined as a year-long break that some students opt to take in between finishing high school and starting college.

High school juniors and seniors, and their parents, are invited to attend this free hour-long program to explore if taking a gap year is not only the right fit but also what options are available for students thinking of taking a gap year.

Many US teens are considering their options before jumping from high school to college. For some it’s a question of feeling “burned out” and needing a break or transition period before enrolling in college. For others, a student may have been wait-listed at their preferred school, and can use a gap year (or gap semester) to reevaluate their options and perhaps reapply to that dream school. Whatever is motivating the student and his or her family, many of today’s high school seniors are deferring college.

The gap year has been growing rapidly in popularity in the U.S and some reports have shown that most students taking a gap year will enroll in a four year college and be more focused, mature, and ready to embrace college learning. In this one hour presentation, followed by questions, Ms. Stievater will cover: how students can benefit from a Gap Year; different Gap Year options; and the Gap Year planning process including how it relates to college planning.

Those interested in attending this presentation should call the Summit Free Public Library at 908-273-0350, ext. 825 to reserve a spot. The Summit Free Public Library is located at 75 Maple St. in Summit, NJ. For more information, please visit http://www.summitlibrary.org.
