Public Library Cards
Public library cards are typically issued at no cost to residents and taxpayers. Once you determine your public library, contact the library and find out the requirements to get a free public library card.
Specific requirements to obtain a public library card vary, and are typically determined by the governing boards of individual libraries. However, typical requirements for a public library card are to prove identity and residency with a New Jersey drivers license or other government-issued identification. Many libraries will also accept additional proof of residency including:
- lease or rental agreement
- tax bill
- utility bill
- bank or credit card statement
Most public library cards have an expiration date and are required to be renewed every 2-3 years. The requirements to renew a public library card are usually identical to the proof required to register for the original card.
If you move to a new community, you are generally expected to surrender the original library card, and register for a new public library card in the new community.
Academic Library Cards
Access and borrowing privileges at academic libraries is typically limited to current students, faculty, and alumni. However, specific policies differ by institution, and academic libraries sometimes provide access and borrowing privileges through reciprocity arrangements to students and faculty from other participating institutions, and members of the public in specific communities.
They may also provide library access to researchers whose research needs cannot be met elsewhere. Please contact the academic library directly for specific details regarding access and borrowing privileges.
